Description / Synopsis
This article discusses a number of conflicts coming to a head. The passengers of the Komagata Maru claim they are starving and provisions are not being provided while the government and the owners of the ship claim that provisions are on board and that additional have been offered and are being turned away by Gurdit Singh. The owners of the steamship company are demanding the remainder of the balance be paid on the charter so the ship may depart and are requesting that the cargo (belonging to the passengers on board) be sold and the money collected be held against the debt. At the same time Gurdit Singh and the passengers claim that the terms of the contract have not been fulfilled so long as they are not allowed to come ashore and refuse to pay. The article also reports a widening breach between the Shore Committee (made up of local landed immigrants) and those aboard the ship resulting in money collected by the local community for the passengers being withheld. |
