- Retreat environments are shown to provide emotional support and the opportunity for previous cancer patients to engage with fellow cancer survivors, experience therapeutic aspects of connecting with nature, and remove feelings of isolation, which are often present when undergoing traditional cancer treatment (Barber, 2012). Knights Cabin Cancer retreats was created in 2014 to improve health behavior post cancer diagnosis (see Lesser et al., 2019 for more information about the program). Preliminary findings of Knights Cabin retreats, which are no-cost retreats for participants and their supporters, show an improvement in mental health related QOL, physical activity, self-esteem, and perceived stress at the 3 and 6 month mark post-retreat. Adherence and motivation are challenging in cancer survivors due to the long-term adverse effects of treatment on psychosocial and physiological health. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess the impact of a behavioral phone intervention after participants attended a Knights Cabin Cancer retreat on health related QOL and physical activity.

- Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative dementia in Canada. Many researchers are investigating therapeutic options for the prevention and treatments of AD using natural plant-based sources i.e. superfoods.Haskap berries (HBs) (Fig. 1) are originally native to Siberia and northeastern Asia but have recently expanded to the Canadian market. The compounds found in HBs, such as the anthocyanin cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), have demonstrated in purified in vitro studies to have beneficial effects on lifespan, development, and neuronal growth. Research goals of this project are to continue previous work into the investigation of the effects of Haskap Berry Extract (HBE) on C. elegans and determine if HBE has neuroprotective effects in C. elegans, in terms of delaying the onset of phenotypic symptoms, and reducing the accumulation of Aβ plaques.

- Digital dermatitis (DD) is the main reason for the lameness in dairy cows (Reichenbach, Jones & Bewley, 2017). Digital dermatitis is caused by different types of bacteria species and results in lesions, mainly on the heels of the rear feet and it affects the skin and causes inflammation in the feet (Palmer and O’ Connell, 2015). Digital Dermatitis affects 70 to 95% of North American farms (Solano, Barkema, Pickel& Orsel, 2017). Foot bath treatments are most commonly used to prevent DD, because treating each animal individually is labour intensive. Data shows that about 38.9% farmers in small operations and 80.8% in large operations use footbath to control DD (Reichenbach,Jones, & Bewley, 2017). Copper is a staple solution for foot baths (Thompson 2015), but copper can be an environmental hazard (Laven 2006). Copper-free options are available, but these have not been fully evaluated (Thompson 2015).

- Terror management research manipulates mortality salience (MS) by asking participants to respond to two prompts about death, i.e., briefly describe the emotions that the thought of dying arouses in you, and briefly describe as specifically as you can what you believe will happen to you physically as you die and after you are dead. The fact that death is primed in a uniform manner across all studies leaves a large gap in the literature, i.e., the manner in which death is imagined could impact responses. This likely explains why this theory contains two competing hypotheses to explain the attitude changes that occurs after death reminders. The worldview polarization hypothesis, asserts that individuals will become more polarized in their previous political orientation (Pyszczynski, 2013). On the other hand, the conservative shift hypothesis, claims that people will become more conservative. The purpose of the current research is to investigate the origin of these hypotheses by manipulating how death is primed, i.e., by priming specific ways of dying.

- We present a solution to a variation of the Job Shop scheduling problem in which jobs (with each job having assigned priorities) are to be run by m machines and serviced by n operators. In a job shop, different machines are run concurrently, which may result in multiple jobs being completed at the same time. It becomes a concern whenever jobs with lower priorities are serviced over jobs with higher priorities. Our goal is to develop a software to guide operators on jobs to be serviced at any gien time. We have formulated several algorithms based on the knapsack and leader election problems to realize our goal each with O(m2) run-time complexity, where m is the number of machines. But we limit our discussion here to the np-hard knapsack problem.

- Fruit such as acai fruits have grown in popularity due to high anti-oxident activity and other health promoting benefits. Studies suggest anthocyanins are responsible for various bioactivities such as anti-osicent, anti-inflamatory, ani-microbial, cardiprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities, among others. Haskap berries (HBs) are especially suited for growth in Canada. The berries also contain a higher concentration of anthocyanins compare to various acai fruits, making them a good candidate for further investigation. Although some in vitro investigation of HBs has been done, in vivo data is currently unavailable. This study addresses the lack of in vivo research on HBs by studying healthspan and lifespan effects of various haskap berry extract concentrations on model organism C. elegans. This study will provide a methodological and data-driven starting point for further research.

- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a non-diagnostic term that covers a range of related birth defects resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure. Under this umbrella term, are several diganostic categories such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS), Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND), and Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBD). Compared to control children, children with FASD will display cognitive impairment in executive functioning as evidenced by results on a test of sustained attention.

- Since the beginning of industrial revolution, burning of fossil fuels has mainly led to increase in atmospheric concentration of CO2 , a Green House Gas (GHG), from 250 ppm to 400 ppm between 1800 and 2012. One way to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and CO2 emission rate is to explore alternative carbon free fuels to meet the energy demand. This project aims at the synthesis and study of metal complexes inspired by biological models that will help better design catalysts to perform water oxidation more effectively.

- Dissolved organic matter (DOM) comes from the partial decomposition of organic material and from water-soluble particles released by living organisms. It is an important piece of the aquatic food chain which plays a role in ecosystem productivity, nutrient cycling, UV light penetration, and heavy metal transport (Baines & Pace, 1991, Downing et al., 2009, Jansen, Kalbitz & McDowell, 2014, McKnight et al., 2001, Saraceno et al., 2009, Stedmon, Markager, & Bro, 2003, Williams et al., 2013,Wright & Reddy, 2009). DOM is a major contributor to the forming processes of soil as well as feeding microbial metabolism in aquatic environments, and relies on the hydrologic regimes for transport through soils to aquatic systems. Various anthropogenic landscapes can potentially have a large influence on the ecosystem dynamics of DOM, both directly (e.g., agriculture) and indirectly (e.g., impervious surfaces) (Baines & Pace, 1991, Jansen, Kalbitz, & McDowell, 2014, Saraceno et al., 2009, Williams et al., 2013, Wright & Reddy, 2009). Willband Creek is located in Abbotsford, BC, Canada (figure 1). It drains an area over 69 km2 by the time it joins the Fraser River at Matsqui Slough and is an important salmon bearing watershed (DFO, 1999). The creek itself begins from a groundwater fed lake in a large urban park near the centre of town before passing through residential, park/natural, industrial, and agricultural land before exiting into the Fraser River, and is joined by side tributaries that come off of the multi-usage Sumas Mountain and passing through agriculture land (figure 2). As part of a larger project, the purpose of this study is to attempt to understand how the various cityscape uses affect the movement and concentration of DOM within a dynamic aquatic environment.

- Mixed martial arts is a relatively new sport that places unique demands on its athletes; yet it is not as well studied compared to other combative sports. Mixed martial arts sport competitions separate athletes into weight classes. To have a competitive size advantage athletes use rapid weight loss (weight cutting) to officially weigh-in 24 hours prior to an event at their weight classes upper limit and then return to normal weight prior to the event.Weight cutting is the use of primarily dehydration (combined with diet and exercise) to reduce ones body mass by 5-10% in a short time period. Studies in different combative sports found that significant weight loss using dehydration increased the risk of muscle damage and decreased energy, cognition and physical performance.

- As superfoods gain popularity in mainstream media, investigating their potential health benefits has become an attractive area of research. Fruits such as açai berries, blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline. In this study, we examined the benefits of the lesser-known haskap berry (Lonicera caerulea) on the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. In previous years it was determined that haskap berry extract can increase lifespan and stress resistance in C. elegans via the daf-16 pathway (homologous to the FOXO pathway in mammals). In this study, the intergenerational transmission of these benefits was explored as were the downstream proteins that are affected by DAF-16. It was found that the lifespan extension benefits gained from HBE do exhibit intergenerational transmission in C. elegans. Using transgenic strains of C. elegans it was found that HBE upregulates the expression of SOD-3 and protects worms from oxidative stress. These results highlight some of the benefits of haskap berry and suggest it is a prime candidate for further study.

- In 1959, CP Snow gave a Rede lecture entitled "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution" which quickly became a touchstone for those interested in the divisions between the arts and the sciences. The idea of two intellectual "cultures" remains prevalent today and any discussions about the division between the arts and the sciences typically use Snow's lecture as the only historical basis. This debate, however, is much older than CP Snow and can be traced back to the beginnings of Western thought.

- Overall, these outcomes support the idea that prenatal alcohol consumption impairs sustained attention and working memory which are important aspects of executive functioning in children. Physical activity appears to improve sustained attention and working memory in children with an FASD diagnosis. Interventions for FASD children should continue to look to increase the level of physical activity that FASD children participate in as its benefits may have far reading impacts in their lives.
