Grizzly Guide Returns From North After Successful Hunting Trip Reporting a successful and enjoyable trip into the north as big-game_ guide foy lL. A. Robertson of New York, B. Sykes returned to Abbotsford last week with two more grizzlies to his credit. The ty of three, which included Mr. Sykes’ son, hunted ‘for twelve days in a well-known game section lying be- tween Fort George and Mt. Robson reservation, ‘‘going in’’ from Penny, a point on the old G.T.P. line. Two fine specimens of the bear family fell to Mr. Robertson’s gun, one of which measured nine feet, three inches from tip to tip, and the other 7 feet, six in- ches. The Easterner also bagged a large mule deer on the same trip, re- turning to New York, where he is traf- fic manager on the N.Y. Central R.R., well satisfied with his luck. This is the eighth annual big-game hunt that Sykes has conducted for the New Yorker, and the tally so far averages two grizzlies per trip, although on one occasion the party was “*skunked,’’ Robertson returning home without his bear. The Easterner’s jaunt out west to the Rockies costs him not‘less than $1,200 each season, but what is that to a $25,000 yearly salary, with vacations paid? Sykes says he has yet to see a grizzley show fight, and he has been in at the death of many. At the same time he does not yeuture in the vicinity of the killing without his .45 Colt alitomatic ready for action, This Abbotsford man bythe way, says he can snip the head of a bird at 20 paces with his big pistol, having filed the trigger release so that it ‘‘hairs’’? at a pull of under two pounds, instead of the regulation five pounds, thus increasing accurancy, seemingly at the expenge of safety. But as svolyer marksman of lifelong practice, kes has a reason more prac- tical than fastidious for so delicately adjusting his firearm. Operating only with a gnide’s license, he is not per- mitted by Jaw to, carry a rifle, so at any crucial moment, much might de- pend upon the accuracy of his revolver aim, He is held responsible for the safety of any party he conducts, and, although he has not yet seen a grizzley turn upon a hunter, he is not so confi- dent that he might not at some time be called upon to step between um green- horn hunter and a wounded bear, Bert Sykes expetts to go “in’’ in’? with another of his old customers wext spring ——_-- > —— A party of Americans passed through town last week with a 1000-lb. moose, which they had secured in the northern part of the province, The first annual dance given by Mis- sion B.P.O.E. lodge will be held on Tues -day, Oct. 19.
