Headlines/Oct. 5, 1994 ; COMMITTEE of the WHOLE | ELECTIONS ARE COMING Your chance to vote for the first-ever faculty and staff representatives on the UCFV Board’s Committee of the Whole comes next week. Elections run from Tuesday, Oct. 11 to Thursday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., at any Admissions and Records office (Abbotsford, Agassiz, Chilliwack, Hope or Mission). For more information contact Bill Cooke at 2820 or 4393. Following are statements from the candidates for staff and faculty positions on the Committee of the Whole. Candidates for the support staff position on the Committee of the Whole Ellenor Greaves I am interested in being staff representative on the Committee of the Whole because I think I can make a contribution to the discussion of staff issues and the solving of any difficulties. I am also secretary to the University College Council and have some understanding of the issues and their impact. Catherine Heyman I want to know what is going on. I want to see where and how decisions are made that affect UCFV employees, students, and especially, as I have a vested interest, support staff. I want to bring our perspective to the committee and the board and value this opportunity for support staff to have their “front line” voice heard. As the pace seems to go ever faster, UCFV continues to grow and undergo changes. I want to understand the reasons behind the changes and the factors which determine decisions; and to bring to the board the staff point of view of how decisions made here can influence our work. Candidates for the faculty member position on the Committee of the Whole Craig Chamberlin Central to all the issues that we are confronted with is the need to effectively manage the changes that UCFV is currently undergoing. Faculty, because of our knowledge and expertise, should and must be the main player in determining the nature of change that we undergo. Tim Cooper . I firmly believe that UCFV exists not to serve the faculty, management or the board. We exist to serve the communities in which we are based. This we do by providing our students with a first class, up-to-date education. As evidenced by the large number of students that leave us after one or two years, we are not currently meeting the bulk of our students’ educational needs. If elected, I would push for the establishment of full degrees here, rather than just double minors. This would include majors. I do not believe our responsibility to our students ends with shaking their hands as we press degrees and diplomas into their palms. If our graduates have difficulty getting a job afterwards this is not just their failure, it is ours too. Thus I advocate for up-to-date degree programs here that the students can use as starters towards a rich and rewarding career path. If this involves asking faculty to keep up to date in their areas, then so be it. By setting up degrees that allow students to go on to graduate school, and also stand a chance in today’s competitive workplace, we are truly serving our community. Lillian Martin As we go through the process of changing from a college to a university-college many of us find our work and working conditions changing dramatically. As faculty representative it would be my job to serve as your watchdog on the board, pointing out how their decisions will affect your work, particularly your effectiveness as teachers. This would require a good deal of input from you, the faculty. Therefore, I would endeavour to ensure that communication is such that you are aware of the major issues the board considers and that you have opportunities to discuss them with me. I have served the college faculty before on the Program Advisory Committee, the Strategic Planning Review Committee and as chair of the College Advisory Council/University College Advisory Council. Henry Speer During my 17-year tenure at UCFV I have had the following administrative positions: Under the old FVC system I was chair of the College Advisory Council (CAC) for one year and Coordinator of Biology for two years. Under the new UCF'V system I was chair of the University College Advisory Council (UCAC) for one year and Program Head of Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) for two years. Following the recent subdivision of the Department of Natural Sciences, I was asked to continue as chair of the Biology department. As chair of both the CAC and UCAC, I attended College Board meetings and am familiar with the Board’s operation. 3 I feel that I have the necessary experience (30 years) and administrative experience to work productively with the faculty, the university college president, and the Board in solving the many problems that we face in the future.
