Headlines/Oct. 19, 1994 UNIVERSITY COLLEGE ee the FRASER VALLEY * International Education Headlines Activities abound in International Ed This summer the International Education department hosted five summer study tours, all from Japan. In total there were 108 students, eight teachers, one tour guide and one special guest. The students studied a variety of areas including ESL, Agriculture, Business, Early Childhood Education. They also toured the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, as well as other areas such as Victoria and Banff, and took part in various summer activities with their homestay families. The summer programs are becoming a larger and more important part of International Education’s activities. They utilize the buildings at a time when rooms when are available and create summer employment for ESL teachers and tour guides. International Education kicked off the 1993/94 fall semester with a barbeque at manager Karola Stinson’s house. Several students from the Student Society attended. Also in attendance were 15 members of the Hokkaido Community College/Takushoku University summer study tour who were winding up their three-week visit to Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Fifteen students, staff, faculty and community members from UCFYV visited Hokkaido in May. (See the article on Hokkaido trip, next page.) The International Education department has 78 students from 15 countries this year. Most are in ESL, but many are in University Studies and Career programs. We are continuing to promote the availability of the Asia Pacific scholarships, and a new scholarship program for students wishing to study in Mexico has just been announced. Linda Toews has been busy learning to use the Internet in order to access information on other funding sources for overseas study. ‘ b Latin America week will heat up November The International Education department, together with Continuing Education, the Centre for Business Development and Training, the Clearbrook Library and Student Activities are teaming up for a week long look at Latin America — Present and Future, November 14-19. All events take place at the Abbotsford campus. The week kicks off with Student Activities presenting a limbo contest and pinata in the cafeteria at lunchtime on Monday, Nov 14. At 7 pm that evening sociology instructor Colin Ridgewell will present slides and conversation on the Nicaraguan Field School of 1992 in the Abby lecture theatre (A102). On Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Building E student lounge at 11:45 the songs and guitar of Arturo Garcia will be featured, followed by a discussion with Amnesty International on Human Rights in Latin America. On Wednesday, Nov. 16 a lecture on the Effects of NAFTA on Mexican Agriculture will be held from 12—1:30pm in Room E217. Thursday Nov. 17 will see the limbo contest and pinata in the cafeteria at lunch as well as musical entertainment by Alejandro Ruiz. The cafeteria will be serving Latin American food. The Mennonite Central Committee will hold a craft display and sale on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Great Hall. Student Activities are coinciding with Carnival Week and having a Mocktail Bar in Great Hall all week. Clearbrook Public Library Free Lecture Series: all 7-9 pm Tuesday, Nov. 15 — Dave Gibson will present Guadalupe — Patron Saint of the Americas. Wednesday, Nov. 16 — there will be a lecture on the Role of Women in Latin America. Thursday, Nov. 17 — hear Stories from the Hearts of three former residents of Latin America who are now Canadian immigrants. The week will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9 am with a presentation by the Centre for Business Development and Training on Emerging Business Opportunities in Mexico with the Mexican Consul to Canada in attendance.
