Seven new Board members appointed The provincial government has appointed seven new members to the University College Board, bringing the total number of Board members to 11. The Board now has seven men and four women members, and includes representatives from small business and education, as well as representatives of the aboriginal community and persons with disabilities. Board Chairman Brian Minter and members Valerie Buchanan, Ronald Dinn and Bill Sharp will continue to serve. New Board members are Sharon Wagner, Dyane Betts, Norman Koch, Gary Lister, Noel Hall, Wendy Lee and Don Olds. Sharon Wagner is a rehabilitation instructor with the CNIB in Abbotsford. She has been an active advocate for persons with disabilities and has worked extensively with Fraser Valley students. Wagner, who is visually impaired, says she’s pleased to be on the Board, and that the latest in text-reading technology will help to keep up with the paperwork. Dyane Betts of Mission is a UCFY grad and holds a master’s degree in criminology from Simon Fraser University. Betts is the coordinator of Victim Services for the Mission RCMP. She is a past-president of Mission Community. Services. Her hobbies include aerobatic flying and fencing. : Norman Koch of Abbotsford is a journeyman mechanic, and service manager with Motorcade Chev-Olds in Abbotsford. He is chair of the Automotive Trade advisory committee for the Ministry of Advanced Education, and is active in amateur baseball. Gary Lister of Chilliwack is the education coordinator for the Sto:lo Tribal Council. He holds a bachelor’s degree in geographic planning and a professional teacher’s certificate, and was a substitute teacher for seven years in Chilliwack before starting his current position. Dr. Noel Hall of Mission is a longtime faculty member and former Dean of Commerce at UBC. He is an avid photographer and actively involved in community affairs in Mission. Former Abbotsford councillor Wendy Lee is an experienced business person. She has been actively involved in community service organizations, particularly the Heart Foundation, and was part-time executive director of the United Way. Don Olds of Hope is a former teacher, and current director of the Fraser Cheam Regional District. He received his bachelor’s degree in teacher training from the University of Winnipeg, and has worked as a newspaper publisher and maintained an active involvement in community radio. Outgoing Board members Ron Voth, Ron Sweeney, Larry Ortis and Austin Gibson were awarded plaques to commemorate their contribution to the University College at the June Board meeting. Ortis urged new members to make sure the University College doesn’t forget its community-based roots or neglect non-degree programs.
