» UNIVERSITY COLLEGE | i the FRASER VALLEY “ Heac Volume 12. Number 13 8 October 14, 1998 Student enrolment up The total number of students registered at UCFV is up by 7.4 per cent this fall, according to a report prepared by the Office of Analytical and Research Studies. The report shows 6,405 students were registered as of September 25, in all programs. “That represents 441 more students,” said Erling Close of OARS. The report provides a snapshot of the current and past enrolment status of the various programs offered at UCFV. Some areas that saw substantial increases include part-time vocational (311); general/university studies — year 1 & 2 (280); and degree level studies — year 3 & 4 (147). Individual course registrations were also up over all. The Chilliwack campus received 341 more course registrations in academic and career programs over last fall, while Abbotsford had 667 additional course registrations compared to 1997. Mission increased by 124 course registrations, Hope by 31. Close was heartened by the increase, especially for the academic and career programs, because “it means more and more, students are choosing UCFYV as the place where they can earn their diplomas and degrees.” There has been a steady increase in the degree program registrations from 500 to 700 to 850 over the past three years, Close said. “The same trend holds true at the first and second-year level.” He said the 23.7% increase in first and second year academic programs at the Chilliwack campus was particularly encouraging, but the drop in part-time vocational registrations was a disappointment. One area that reported a substantial decrease in enrolment was full-time vocational, with 105 fewer students than last year. Close says the apparent decline is artificial, and a result of moving the ECE certificate and diploma programs from full-time vocational to career technical studies as per a Ministry directive. Another area that saw a significant downturn in the _ number of students enrolled was the English as a Second Language program. This was largely due to the cancellation of government contracts which funded some of the courses, said Marie Moore, ESL department head. The report was presented to the UCFV Board of Governors October 7. A copy of the full report will be made available on the web site at: ucfv.be.ca/studir. htm. The 1 Sth fannie United Way campaign at 1 UCF V is underway. As Carole Higginbottom of CR & D points out, this year’s goal is $20, 000. See story on page 5.
