BIG KILL OF DEER MABE ON SUMAS MOUNTAIN FIRST DAYS OF OPEN SEASON Venison and pigeon-pie comes into the menu in seyeral local homes this week, satisfying evidence of the hunt- ing and shooting ability of the men- folk, For Saturday last opened the Season for bear, deer,/blue grouse, wild pigeons, and other game, early dawn finding many deer-hunters out on the trail, having “spotted” their quarry previously, and slept overnight in thé bush at some likely spot. Prac- tically every hunter who had so plan- ned his day was successful, the deer being more curious than wild before the nimrods disturbed them. Several bucks were brought in from Sumas mountain, one, shot by A. Mer- cer of Matsqui, dressing over 200-Ibs. Among others who secured game on the nearby hill were Roy Serl, Edgar Boley, M. Lindores, J. Dawson and his two sons, J. Mitchell, F. Urquhart, and ABBOTSFORD. Flocks of thousands of these tasty little birds make Sumas their home, but have become a pest to farmers be- cause of the seed and grain they con- sume. TUCKER MANN BLOCK, ABBOTSFORD of 50 for the season, which closes on September 30. Opinion is divided on duck and pheasant-hunting prospects in this district for the coming season (which opens Oct. 15), the majority of obsery- ers and hunters guestioned agreeing that these two chief game birds will not be plentiful. Althougn we are told some large flocks of pheasants are to be occasionally seen around the Sumas district. The many dogs running at large are doubtless one of the causes, but ma- rauding cats have certainly taken a heavy toll of pheasants, both nesting hens and f , these falling easy £ YARWOOD -& DURRANT Barristers and Solicitors Notaries Public Vancouver office— 703-4 Holden Bldg. Then crows are not least on the long list of creature prey- ing on game birds, and many a promis- ing little nest have they ruthless- ly destroyed. So while the Game Board has carefully reared hundreds of this beautiful, “sporty” table bird and liberated many in this area, the few adult birds and occasional late-hatch family of pheasant chicks to be seen indicate that much of the game-conservation effort has merely resulted in providing more prey for depredatory animals and birds. Provincial game wardens are under orders to shoot wandering cats in game areas, and a penalt¥ is provided for allowing cats to roam at large, but this is not sufficient. Sportsmen should be encouraged to expend an occasion- al shell on game enemies. And this’ encouragement would not be awaited did they sufficiently realize that a con- dition such as exists as present will ultimately result in total extermin- ation of certain game birds. C, F.
