W. J. Fraser was tendered re-appoint- ment as president of the organization, but declined, The names of C, Lamson and A. H. Harrop were submitted and a close ballot resulted in the appoint- ment of Mr Harrop as president. W. G. Fadden was selected as vice-presi- dent and W. Blinch as seeretary. ©. A. Lamson, W. D. Fraser, W. J. Fraser, J. Frith and E, Marcey were elected dir- ectors. At the request of'the meeting, Oliver Blatchford read over the association’s regulations, which were approved. It was left to the directors te appeint game wardens, and a meeting for this purpose was subsequently set for Mon- day evening. Will Fadden brought in a motion ask- ing the game association members to prohibit Sunday shooting on their pre- mises, as he was doing. Following some dicussion a vote was taken, but the motion failed, The meeting was interupted at inter- vals by J. Murphy of Huntingdon, who claimed prior right to use of the room for a ratepayers’ meeting, which he had called. After some argument, his demands were met by the game associa- tion meeting being hastened to a con- elusion, and the hall turned over to Mr. Murphy. Names of the members follow: W. J. Fraser, D. Courtman, the municipal clerk, had been omitted, for obvious reasons. And although the matter refused publication did not obtain space in other papers cireulating through the diStrict, Mr. Murphy was freely articulate in his suspicions that the News publisher’s discretion had been influenced by the Sumas Council. Entertaining bits of wit and philosophy interspersed the gpeaker’s verbal broadsides, together with flattering personal observations, one of which acrimoniously questioned the mental capacity of a councillor. DUARK Mr. Murphy when he pointed out that: the annual financial report usually did not reach ratepayers until the latter pars of January, too late for them to completely study and appreciate before the new Council had been installed. He suggested that 4 financial summary of municipal business be available earlicr. One or two dangerous crossings needed more attention from the Council, the speaker said, and he went on to explain why he did not see justification for the tax penalties imposed by the munici- pality, According to Mr, Murphy’s deduc- tions, administration of Sumas munici- pal affairs cost $1,400 per month last year, and he felt sure that with certain changes a saving of 40 per cent. could be effected in the taxes, A womam clerk at a salary of $50 monthly he consider- ed would be satisfactory, and the con- stable’s and road foreman’s duties should be performed by one man, Re- ferance was made to a ‘‘bewhiskere«d gentleman’’ who had installed the aud- iting and office system, and also to the usual municipal grant to the Salvation Army, Speaking on behalf of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic church, near Abbots- ford, of which he is a member, Mr. Murphy insisted that this church, whick was located within the municipality, should be as much entitled to a grant asthe Salvation Army; he did not ac- cept an explanation that the Salvation Army was a charitable institution, and that municipalities are not permitted to donate to religious organizations: The speaker’s references to the work of the Salvation Army provoked one of the returned men present to comment comparatively upon some of the organ- izations which were active among men in the trenches during the war. Mr, Murphy also took advantage of the occasion to explain his connection with the defunct F.V. Huntingdon Far- mers’s Co-operative Association, main- taining that althongh manager up to a certain time, he was not responsible for the failure of the business. Giving a display of platform endur ance such as would shame many a sea- soned political orator, Mr. Murphy tenaciously held ‘‘the floor’’ against all comers well on to midnight. Not only did he ignore most of the chair- man’s (Mr. W. C. Bowman) remon- strances, but by sheer vocal power overwhelmed those who would stand to speak in their own defence or upon the issues raised.
