2 ABBOTSFORD, SUMAS & MATSQUI NEWS July Il, 1945 Accidents Cut Income One-third A recent report of a survey made by a Corps of Engineers at Waskington into acci- dents showed that improper supervision was one of the major causal factors. Failure of supervisory personnel was due to: 1. Lack of knowledge of their duties and responsibilities; 2. Questionable judgement in determining when personal supervision was re- quired; 3. Lack of explicit instructions as to how the work should be done. Most workmen take pride in being assoc- lated with a well managed and supervis operation. They welcome necessary leadership by superintendents, formen and other trained key-men who know what they are trying to do and how to do it efficiently and safely. Preventing accidents pays dividends to workmen as well as to employers, A disabling accident means a cut of more than 33 per cent in the income of most workmen, to say nothing of the suffering and inconvenience to them and their dependents. To the employers in the industry it means paying over 66 per cent of an absentee’s wages for which there is no return. The em- Safety in Air Service and Business.... For over a week now the skies over Port Alberni and district have been dotted at regu- lar intervals with planes—planes of all types —bombers, flying boats and fighters. What a spot to be in, observes the West Coast Advo- cate of Port Alberni, if their engines failed or some mechanical trouble developed. There’s not a field or landing spot within miles they could glide down to and prevent an inevitable erash. There is plenty of mountains on which they can crash but not one ounce of protection in their favor. The,loss of a plane over a week ago has again shown the need to construct emergency air strips on Vancouver Island, where the ter- rain is mountainous and cleared and level farm lands are few and far between. With air travel on the increase steps should be taken to i as many emergency landing fields as Possible and at distances that would eliminate some of the hazards of flying. In business every precaution is forced up- on the employer to maintain safety, and cost is not considered, as long as the firm or indivi- dual has to meet the bill. With the govern- ment it is different. They are not compelled to do anything of the sort. They collect their monies from the people, and from business, but on the other hand they will not spend it except under continued pressure or from some political move. Once you have licked your own tempta- tions you can lick anything. ployer is faced with the necessity of finding a suitable replacement and paying full Wages to him for doing a less efficient job than was being done by the regular workman.
