The top four men’s and top four women’s teams in the BC Colleges Athletic Association will meet at Bateman ’ Park in Abbotsford to decide who gets the - gold medal and goes on to the national championship. While UCFV men are definitely out of the playoff picture this year, Jane Antil, Athletic Manager, says “our women are still in the hunt and could land a playoff. berth.” “Our women usually do make the playoffs,” she said. “But this year, injuries and sickness have weakened our chances a bit.” UCC, Kamloops will be hosting the. ~ nationals this year, and will get home berths for their teams, but the other two B.C. spots will be hard fought for at Bateman. The teams that look strongest at this time are Langara and Okanagan on the men’s side, and Capilano, Malaspina, and host Cariboo for the women, Antil said. Semi-final play gets underway Friday, October 30 with the first placed team (based on league standings) playing the fourth, and second vs. third placed finishers squaring off at noon (women) and 2:00 p.m. (men). a The medal games take place on Saturday, October 31 with the women playing for the bronze at 10:00 a.m. and the gold at noon. The men play _ their bronze medal game at noon and go.for.the gold at 2:00 p.m. , Antil expects a turnout of between 300-400 people. “Last time we hosted the provincials (1996), we had such a good turnout, we ran out of programmes,” she said. “A lot will depend on the weather.” There is no admission charge to see this high level of soccer. June. ‘98) came up big at the Commonwealth games in Maylaysia last month. Ikeda, a resident of Abbotsford, and - one of Canada’s top gymnasts, won two silver medals for the pommel horse and parallel bar events. Congratulations, Richard!. Mansell Obituary UCFV’s Men’s soccer team was greatly saddened by the passing away of Barry Mansell‘on July 18, at the age of 66. Barry was a member of the men’s coaching staff for the fall seasons of 1995-97. - _ “He was a real gentlemen, in everything he did,” said assistant coach Ken Fernstrom. “Even though we didn’t always agree — what two coaches do?” . Fernstrom said, “he was a pleasure to work with. He is’ sorely missed.” The team is honouring Barry with commemorative insignia on their uniforms as they “play the football” and had a moment’s silence at their opening home game September 26. Besides playing and coaching for several years in the Lower Mainland, Barry’s career included playing professionally in England for Portsmouth, Reading and. Bournemouth. ~.
