The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is a comprehensive, regional post-secondary institution that enrolls over 11,000 students per year and is larger than half the universities in Canada. Nestled in the beautiful Fraser Valley just east of Vancouver, British Columbia, UFV has campuses in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission, and regional centres in Hope and Agassiz. UFV focuses on teaching excellence, with the highest priorities for research being to support teaching and to address local issues and regional needs. Faculty, staff, and students are engaged in a significant number of research projects that both enrich the environment of the university and contribute to the development of the Fraser Valley region. This publication is intended to create awareness of this activity and to serve as a reference to those seeking access to specific expertise at the institution. The JHB publishes original scholarly articles on all aspects of historical biography and relevant book reviews. Our international Editorial Board includes well known scholars from such institutions as Cambridge, York University, the National University of Ireland, University of Sydney, and Smith College in Massachusetts, among others. The irst edition was launched in the spring of 2007, including a special introductory print run, and a subsequent edition appeared in the fall. Volume 3 will soon be online for spring 2008, and volumes 1 and 2 are archived with open access on our website. The scholarly response to the JHB has been very encouraging, and we have received a number of high quality submissions from around the world. The purpose of the review is to make available the research, indings and other similar material on the selected topics. The topics selected for journal issues are those of regional and wider interest. The topic of an issue can determine the types of material but in general the Review encourages submissions from practitioners and scholars, including undergraduate and graduate students, college and university instructors, those working in non-governmental agencies, and workers with public and private agencies. These submissions might take the form of research papers (both quantitative and qualitative), literature reviews, evaluations, case studies, and position papers. 1(1): Teaching and Learning Online 1(2): Selected Papers from the Fraser Child and Family Development Fund 1(3): Selected Papers from ICICTE 2006 2(1): Ethical Citizenship and Post-Secondary Education 2(2): Cross-border Relationships in an Era of Globalization 2(3): Selected Papers from ICICTE 2007 General Editorial Board Greg Anderson Wendy Burton Yvon Dandurand Scott Fast Ken Fernstrom (Chair) Kim Isaac Sylvie Murray David Thomson Terry Waterhouse Rob Woodside Issues and more information are available online at journals.ufv.ca/rr/ 38 University of the Fraser Valley Publications and Research 2007/08 Centres and instutes Institute of Research on Citizenship and Culture Attributes of citizenship include a sense of public identity, rights, obligations, participation in public affairs and acceptance of basic societal values. Increased awareness of what constitutes good citizenship is fostered by an explicit attention to its historical, political, cultural, gender and socio-economic dimensions. Projects carried by researchers in a variety of disciplines explore such issues. The website is located at www.ufv.ca/Institute_of_Research_on_Citizenship Centre for Criminal Justice Research – Sun Centre of Excellence The Centre for Criminal Justice Research – Sun Centre of Excellence (CCJR), located in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, is a state of the art crime analysis laboratory that provides the highest level of privacy and security for interoperability and criminal justice research. CCJR is dedicated to the development and implementation of cutting edge methodologies and techniques for the study of criminal and social justice issues. In addition, it is committed to the expansion of criminal justice research innovation and research into the root causes of crime, crime prevention, crime hot spots and reduction programming, repeat victimization analysis, proliic offenders, justice operations including the economics/costs of crime and the evaluation of public safety initiatives. The Centre is focusing on interoperability between justice and urban databases, agent-based modeling, process simulations for experimentation, computational intensive approaches and new visualization techniques. The centre represents a partnership between academics, Sun Microsystems Canada and criminal justice partners, including the police. The website is located at www.ccjr.ca Centre for Education and Research on Aging (CERA) The UFV Centre for Education and Research on Aging aims to facilitate a collaborative process between educators, researchers, practitioners, students, elders and caregivers in the Fraser Valley to learn more about the issues of the aging process. The centre’s main focus is the understanding of aging as a process, including but not exclusive to the issues and challenges of older adults. On May 27th, 2008, CERA hosted its 3rd annual symposium entitled, “Aging in the Fraser Valley”. For more information please visit the website located at www.ufv.ca/aging.htm University of the Fraser Valley Publications and Research 2007/08 39 UFV FIELDS Centre Over the past academic year, a task force of faculty and staff has been working to develop a research and education centre that will foster and support collaborative, interdisciplinary and communitybased projects in sustainability. The new centre has been tentatively named the FIELDS Centre (FIELDS stands for Fraser Valley Initiative in Environment, Learning, and Developing Sustainability). The FIELDS Centre will 1) function as a nexus for those with similar research interests in sustainability; 2) serve as a resource for UFV and neighbouring communities; 3) create research and education connections between community organizations, businesses, and academia; and 4) foster student involvement in sustainability research. The FIELDS Centre will become operational during the Fall 2008. For more information, contact Dr. Michelle Rhodes, at michelle.rhodes@ufv.ca Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at UFV (CICS) promotes interdisciplinary research and scholarship relating to India and the Indo-Canadian communities of British Columbia. The CICS is a place for a wide range of learning activities and resource materials. It is partnering with other academic institutes in India and will soon become a national information repository, and a site for valuable social, cultural, and economic research. The CICS is also the home of the BC Regional Economic Development Chair in Canada-India Business and Economic Development. The Centre provides a vehicle for the Chair to engage in close collaborations with the drivers of BC’s economy as well as business and academic partners in India. The website is located at www.ufv.ca/CICS.htm Institute for International Cooperation and Community Development UFV is in the early stages of the formation of an Institute for International Cooperation and Community Development, the intent of which will be to promote and facilitate international research and study at UFV, particularly in the areas of sustainable human and community development. Recognizing the interconnectedness that has been intensiied by processes of globalization, IICCD will favour an integrated approach that links local and global concerns. The goals of the centre are as follows: to serve as a research facility for scientiic inquiry into factors related to optimal human performance; to serve as an information centre supporting the activities of coaches, teachers, and medical professionals in the Fraser Valley; to provide testing and training services for both novice and elite athlete populations. The website is located at www.ufv.ca/kpe/Introduction Luminescence Dating Research Laboratory The UFV Luminescence Dating Research Laboratory is a state-ofthe-art facility built around the most current luminescence dating system manufactured by Risø National Laboratory in Denmark. The laboratory, which is housed in the UFV Geography Department (Abbotsford campus), became operational in September 2007, and is supported by National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grants awarded to its director, Dr. Olav B. Lian. The laboratory not only serves as a centre for leading edge research, but is also a place where senior UFV students can be mentored in the processes by which key research problems are identiied, new knowledge is acquired, and, in turn, is applied to solving problems in environmental science. Luminescence dating is a method that is used to ind out how much time has elapsed since common mineral grains (e.g., sand grains in a desert dune) were last exposed to sunlight. The method is therefore used to establish the timing of landform change which can, in turn, be used as a direct proxy for environmental (e.g., climate) change. The initial focus of the research in the new UFV laboratory will be associated with gaining an understanding of how the landscape in British Columbia adjusted to the luctuations in climate that have occurred since the end of the last ice age.
