After removal from live wire begin artificial respiration at once. (See Apparent Drowning). Treat burns. (See Burns and Scalds). Epilectic Fit.——Loosen all tight clothing about neck, chest and waist. Place hard pad or cork between teeth. Prevent patient injuring himself, but do not restrain convulsive movements. Do not give stimulants or other liquids. Let patient rest (See Unconsciousness). Fainting.—(See Unconsciousness). On return to consciousness patient may be given cold water to drink. Keep in recumbent position after re- covery. (See Shock and Unconsciousness.) Fish Hook, Extraction of.—Cut off the barb pointed end of hook with file or cutting pliers and pull the remaining portion of hook backwards from the skin. If point is not quite through the skin push it through and then act as above. Similarly a crochet hook in hand may be extracted. Apply simple dressing or hot boracic fomentation. Fits (In Children)—See Convulsions. (In Adults)—See Epileptic Fits. Foreign Body in Ear and Nose.—Do not attempt to remove, secure med- ical aid. Caution.—Never syringe or probe the ear or nose. Foreign Body in Eye.—Prevent rubbing of the eye. If under lower lid, pull down lid gently with forefinger and thumb. If body can be seen, gently remove it with corner of handkerchief twisted and moistened. If under upper lid, lift lid forward, push up lower lid, to brush it with lower eye- lashes, then let it go. Or seat patient facing hght, stand behind him resting head on your chest, evert lid by placing match on upper lid half inch above eyelashes—press back and pull upper eyelashes and lid upward over match. If impossible to dislodge in this manner call. doctor. If embedded in eye- ball do not attempt removal. Drop in Castor Oil or Olive Oil. Apply pad of absorbent cotton, bandage. Take patient to a doctor. (See Lime in Eye.) FRACTURES (General Rules). Attend to injury on the spot and before removal. Arrest severe bleeding. Send for doctor. Fix limb by means of splints (padded) extending beyond the joints above and below seat of fracture, and bandage. Be careful in han- dling, avoiding unnecessary movements of parts. Do not drag off clothing or boots, if necessary cut along seams. Treat for shock. FRACTURES—COMPOUND As when bone protrudes through skin with hemorrhages: first, control bleeding on extension, place limb in natural position, apply splints. FRACTURES—COMPLICATED With injury to some internal organ, always apply ice. Ribs.—No bandage, recumbent position, lean to injured side. Pelvis.—Broad bandage. Tie knees together. Head.—Slightly raise head and shoulders. Dressing, ring pad and ban- dage to control bleeding.
