He Likes What He Likes! Editor, A. S. M. News: I like the depression. prosperity for me. I have had more fun since the de- pression started than £ ever had in my life; I had forgotten how to live what it meant tohave real friends, what it was like to eat common every day food. Fact is, 1 was getting just a little high hat. Three years ago, only one man of our outfit could be out of town at a time and he had to leave at the last minute and get back as soon as pos-| sible. Many times I haye driven 50 miles to a banquet, sat through three hours of bunk in order to make a 5-) minute speech, then drive the 50 miles back so as to get ready for werk| the next morning. Nowadays the whole outfit could leave the shop now and it wouldn't make any difference. I like the depression. I have time to visit my friends, to make new ones. Two years ago when 1 went to a nel- ghboring town, I always stayed at the hotel, Now I go home with my frie- nds, stay all night and enjoy home- cooking. It's great to drop into a store and feel that you can spend an hour or two or three or half a day fant visiting and not feel that you are wasting val- uable time. I like the depression. I am getting acquainted with my neighbors. In the last six months 1 have become acquainted with folk who have been living next door to me for three years. I am following the Biblical’ admonition,"Love your nei- ghbors." One of my neighbors has one of the best looking wives 1 havé ever seen. She is a dandy. I am getting acquainted.with my neighbors and learning to love them. Three years ago, 1 was always dress ed up But now, I hayen’t bought a suit in two years, I am mighty proud of my Sunday-go -to church clothes. When I-dress up, I dress up, and I don't mean maybe. I like the de- No more years ago a was so busy that my wite and I n't see much of each other. a ‘went home to a0 a week I scat 6 2 never had time to a6 anywhere vith her. If I did go on a party, I could never locate her, since there was al- ways a “blonde” or a “red head” a- yailable I didn't much worry about it. My wife belonged to all the organ- izations in town. She even joined the young mother club. We don't have any children, but she was study- ing—and between playing bridge and going to clubs, she was never at home, We got stuck up and hifalutin. We even took down the old family bed and bought a set of twin beds—on the installment plan. When I would come home at night if my wife was at home, she would already be in her bed and I would crawl in mine. If she came in {first it was yice ver * We like the d ession . We have come down off our pedestral and are really living at my house now. ‘the twin beds are stored in the garage ahd the old family affair is being useu. We are enjoying life.: Instead of taking a hot water bottle to bed these cold nights, she sticks her heels into my back just like she did before Billy Atkinson was elected. I haven't been on a party in 18 months. I haye lost my book of tele- phone numbers. My wife has dropped all the clubs. I believe we afe falling in love all over again. I am pretty well satisfied with my wife. Thinic { will keep her until she ts forty, and then if I feel like I do now, I may trade her for two twenties, 1 am feeling better since the de- pression. I take more exercise. I walk to the job, and lot of the folks who used to drive are walking with me, I like the depression. My digestion is better. I haven't been to a doctor in a year. I can eat anything I want to. I am getting Yeal honest-to-good- ness food. Three years ago, we haa filet mignon once a week, now we haye round steak and flour gravy. Thep, we had roast breast of turkey hen, now we are glad to>get sow- bosom, with the buttons on it. 1 like the depression, My salary has been cut to where I can’t afford to buy fancy foodstuffs, and we can't afford to hayé sandwiches and frozen desserts and all that nfoolishness which has killed more good men than the World war. I like the depression.” Three years ago I never had ttme to go to church, { played golf all day Sunday, or went fishing, and besides, I was so darn smart that there wasn't a preacher in Abbotsford who could tell me any- thing, Now I am going to church regular- ly, never miss a Sunday, And if this depression keeps on 1 will be going to ek-day prayer meetings before long.
