Headlines/April 15, 1998 Bassford » continued population; and a partnership with Durham College and Trent University, whereby offerings of the three institutions could be made available on a cooperative basis to a wide range of students, regardless of location. As a strong proponent of joint ventures with the private sector, Dr. Bassford instituted a number of off-campus programs with Ontario Hydro, Chrysler, Motorola and others, to broaden access to post-secondary education. He also launched Atkinson’s off-shore diploma program in Hong Kong and other Asian locations, and started a number of initiatives in multiculturalism and First Nations studies, reflective of his broad interests in teaching and learning. Off-campus, Dr. Bassford has filled a number of volunteer roles. He has been an adjudicator for the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship’s Board of Inquiry Tribunal, a vice-president of Surrey Place Centre (a Toronto-area hospice), and a member of the Board of Humber River Regional ~ Hospital. “As we moved through the selection : process, it became apparent that Dr. - Bassford’s interests and accomplishments represented a perfect ‘fit’ for UCFV,” notes Dr. Hall. “He understands the issues involved in an institution as diverse as_. -. UCFYV in terms of programming, _ multicampus locations, applied diplomas, university degree programs, trades, health sciences, and co-operative, continuing, and international education. Both he and his wife Jane are looking forward to life in the Fraser Valley. Outstanding Achievement award This award is presented to a group or individual within UCFV who have/has made an extraordinary contribution to advancing the mission of UCFV in the community. This award is given for specific projects or achievements that do not fall within the individual or group’s normal job responsibilities. The University College Council will select the winner of this award. Deadline: May 4, 1998. Criteria The project or achievement must: *° have had a significant impact on the mission of UCFV * have been initiated or implemented by UCFV employee(s) or student(s) * be outside the scope of the employee(s)’ regular job description * have taken place at least partially during the preceding 12 months, Betty Urquhart Community Service award This award is presented to a group or individual who have/has made an extraordinary contribution to a community within the UCFYV region. It was named in honour of Betty Urquhart after her death in 1995. Betty was one of the college’s first employees, and spent much of her career forging links between the institution and its communities, especially in Chilliwack. The award is given for a specific project or series of projects. Nominations may be made to the UCFV Board by anyone in the college region. The Board will select the winner. Deadline: May 13, 1998. Criteria The project or achievement must: ° have had a significant impact on the community * fit within UCFV’s mission of “enhancing the quality of life of its communities” * have been undertaken at least partially as a volunteer endeavour, and not part of anyone’s salaried or contractual obligations ° have taken place at least partially during the last 12 months. Recipients must have played a major role in the planning and implementation of the project. Student nominees needed for top awards UCFV is looking for nominations for its top student awards — the Governor General’s medal and the Lieutenant Governor’s medal. Faculty, students, and the general public are welcome to nominate qualified UCFV students for these awards. Deadline: May 10. Governor General's silver medal _ Awarded to an undergraduate who achieves the highest academic standing upon graduation from a bachelor’s degree program. ; Governor General's bronze medal Awarded to a student graduating from a diploma program of at least two years’ duration. Lieutenant Governor's silver medal Awarded to a student graduating from a program of less than two years’ duration. Nominees must have both a high academic standing and have been active members in their programs and/or the UCFV community in general.
