Students have written out recipes, provided stories about the cultural traditions involved in their recipes, helped with editing, and also worked together to plan and produce a day of multicultural cooking and crafts to share with the community (April 13 at the Skwah Band Hall in Chilliwack, 619 Wellington. Faculty file History department news Bonnie Huskins will be delivering a paper entitled “Burlesque Processions and the Construction of Social Boundaries: Calithumpians and Polymorphians in 19th-Century Saint-John” at the Boundaries Conference of the University of Edinburgh Centre of Canadian Studies, on May 4. Daniel Kwan’s book, Marxist Intellectuals and Workers: Deng Zhongxia and the Chinese Labor Movement, will be published this summer by the University of Washington Press. Wolfson gets PhD Congratulations to social services instructor Gloria Wolfson, whose doctoral degree is now “signed, sealed, and delivered”. Her degree is from Nova --- Southeastern University, and her thesis topic was “Prior Learning Assessment: A Case Study of Acceptance of Innovation and Change.” Wolfson sends thanks to all the UCFV folks who participated in the research, either through filling out the questionnaire or allowing her to interview them at some length. The annual Fashion Design, Fine Ants, and Graphic Design Open House will be held on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 6 p.m. It will feature displays and demonstrations in all three studio areas, plus a fashion show in the Abbotsford cafeteria. We're also trying something new this year — a gala supper show to be held in the evening. The $20 tickets will include a full meal and a raffle ticket, as well as the fashion show. Online students make Malaysian connection Students in Patrick O’Brien’s online computer ethics course have made some international connections recently. Mark Bullen is a UBC researcher who is studying the use of critical thinking in online classes. He is monitoring O’Brien’s class, with the permission of the students. He recently began to teach a three-week online class to students in Malaysia, all of whom are telephone company empoyees. _ Bullen e-mailed O’Brien and suggested that the two groups of students be invited to chat. O’Brien’s students took him up on the offer and now the Malaysian students and the UCFVers are doing some online international socializing. As for O’Brien, he sees the potential for offering UCFV online courses overseas. “Our courses are open to anyone who is a registered student and who can connect to us.” O’Brien will be offering another free online learning workshop for faculty and staff from May 13 to June 7. More environmentally and fiscally friendly tips from | Facilities e Start a composting program in your Employee Development Centre update Reaction to the first few months of training offered through the Employee Development Centre has been enthusiastic, according to Employee Relations coordinator Diane Griffiths. Response was particularly strong to training on Netscape, HTML, and other "aspects of the Internet. There will be more courses offered through the EDC in April and May. One focus will be on teaching faculty how to use computer software and technology to enhance their presentations. Griffiths notes that some faculty may be interested in trying this out at conferences this spring. Griffiths would like to hear from anyone interested in offering courses to other employees or from anyone with ideas for training course topics, or from departments or groups seeking training on specific topics.
