N. Hill, finance committee econvenor,
reported a grant of $100 from Sumas
Council. Matsqui and Abbotsford
Councils will be interviewed immediate-
ly, he said,

A concession committee, consisting of
Miss Seldon (con.), Mrs. McKinnon,
and Miss Ella Fraser, was named.

Mr. O. Sherwood reported that the
Ware-Nelson field, selected for the
sports, was hardly suitable. He recom-
mended Clayburn athletic grounds as
more suitable,

Tag-selling will be conducted by the
Native Daughters, proceeds for the Red
Cross.

Further discussion arose over the pro-
posal to construct a special dance plat-
form on the grounds, carpenter work of
which was quoted at $235 by Contractor
MeDonald, A counter-proposal by the
chairman, E, S. Plaxton, that this floor
be made part of a permanent communi-
ty hall, commemorative of the Jubilee
celebration, was favorably received, and
method of finance, site and type of buil-
ding was considered by the meeting.
Tender on a building 80 feet by 100
feet, similar to that in Sumas, but wi

a dome roof, was submitted by J. D.Me-
Donald. It was decided to immediately
define specifications and call for ad-
ditional tenders. Mr. MeDonald said
he could lay floor and foundations of
the structure with roof frame in “two
weeks, to enable its use on Jubilee Day.

Local Girl Reports Attack By Tramp

Provincial police are investigating
a complaint of attempted assault, made
by an Abbotsford young woman, who
reported that she was molested by a
tramp while walking along the’ ©.P.R.
track near St. Nicholas Tuesday even-
in at 8.30. The girl stated that she
was threatened by the tramp, who
ripped her dress with a jack-knife. The
police immediately patrolled the C.P.R.
track between Abbotsford and! Mission,
and kept watch at the border and the
Mission bridge, but met with no sus
picious characters,

Sumas District Board of Trade is to
be held at Huntingdon on Tuesday of
next week,

Sumas Council Considering
Trades License Bylaw

A bylaw to facilitate satisfactory
opening up of new roads in Sumas muni-
cipality was given first readings at
Saturday’s council meeting, providing
that land owners be given ten days’
notice to remove fences and similar ob-
structions, after which, if the work is
not done, it will be performed by the
Municipalty, and charged as taxes,

A bylaw was passed authorizing bor-
rowing of $3,000 from the Royal Bank
until tax monies were received.

W. H. Fadden petitioned the Council
to assist him in installing a water ser-

Newlandburn Farm, Matsqui, was the
scene of a happy gathering on Friday
afternoon of last week, when Miss May
Aitken Whitson, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew Whitson, and Richard
Wards, son of Mr. dnd Mrs. William
Wards of Kilgard, were united in mar-
riage, Rev. T. S. Paton officiating.
The bride, who was given in marriage
by her father, was charmingly attired
in a white silk gown, and wore a
coronet of orange blossoms. Her sister,
Miss Johanna Mary Whitson, attended
as bridesmaid, dressed in white silk,
Mr, Robert Stewart was groomsman,
After the ceremony a reception was
held in Hygiene Hall, Gifford, when
the numerous guests were served a tasty
tepast. Many nice gifts were tendered
the happy couple, who will reside in Ab-
botsford after a short honeymoon,

MATSQUI VILLAGE PROJECTS
DOMESTIC WATER SYSTEM

A water system is projected in Mats-
qui village, and to assist in the venture,
the municipal couneil was petitioned by
36 residents at Saturday’s meeting to
enquire into costs of running a pipe line
from Sumas mountain, where a source
of supply has been reserved for several
years, Reeve McCallum and Crs, Wood
and Mutch were named to investigate
the project in advice with the municipal
engineer. If effected, costs of the
scheme will be levied under a local im-
provement bylaw.

Tenders received for the cutting, and
grading of the Jackson road were not
acceptable, and Councill r Mutch will
have the work done by day labor,

The much-diseussed pound bye-law
was finally passed with amendments
that exclude all Ward One and a por-
tion of Ward Three, It is expected that
a plebiscite on the subject will be taken
at the next municipal election.

In preparation of the 1928 assessment
roll, Municipal Clerk Lefevre, as asgs-
essor, will go over each parcel of Mats-
qui dyked area in person, and any pro-
test against the values will be settled
at the court of revision. This is the de
cision after a long discussion over
the employment of outside experts,

Quebec Handicrafts Flourish

other household arts are not lost
but still flourish in Canada. ‘The
old arts still live in the Province of
Quebec’ where they are an integral
Part of the household duties of the
French-Canadians.

One of the most interesting han-
dicraft products is the “arrowed
sash” or “Ceinture fléchée” once the
popular and almost indispensable
Part of the winter garb ‘of the
French-Canadian “habitant.” The
arrowed design accounts for its name
and one can judge from the above
photograph of a fine specimen that
the art of weaving such a sash by
hand would be difficult and extreme-
ly delicate, The finest “ceintures
fléchées’” were made in L’Assomp-
tion, near Berthier, Quebec, this
handicraft still being carried on
there. The use of a white sash
somewhat similar dates back to
the seventeenth century when if
formed part of the costume of
the scholars of the Seminary of
Quebec. Sashes were also worn
in the early days by the “cou-
reurs des bois,” but these were not

handicrafts of Quebec practiced at
close range recently during the Can-
adian Folk Song and Handicraft
Festival held at the Chateau Fron-
tenac, Quebec, May 20 to 22, being
arranged by the National Museum
of Canada and the Canadian Pacific
Railway, This Festival was unique
in musical and handicraft perform-
ances on the continent. It served
the great purpose of crystalizing in
the minds of those who saw it the
fact that these old-time arts and
folk songs are still as much a part of
the everyday life of the people of old
Quebec, as are the modern conven-
iences and jazz music that feature
many Canadian homes in other sac-
