BROWN SUGAR COOKIES 2 cup shortening 12 cups sifted pastry flour 1 cup brown sugar packed 2 tsp. baking powder 1 egg unbeaten 2 tbsp. hot water _ % tsp. salt % cup dates cut in pieces 1 tsp. vanilla % cup pecans chopped 12 cups all purpose flour or Sift flour and baking powder together and add half to first mixture. Beat until smooth. Add hot water then remaining flour, dates and nuts and blend. Drop level tablespoons of dough on greased cookie sheet. Press cookies lightly with floured tines of fork to flatten slightly and make attractive ridged tops. Bake in moderate oven of 350° F. for 10 to 15 minutes. Yield—3 dozen. Mary McCurdy, Veteran. ENGLISH ROCKS 1 Ib. flour Grated rind of 1 lemon 6 oz. margarine 1 tsp. baking powder 6 oz. sugar 1 egg, well beaten 6 oz. currants A little milk 2 oz. mixed peel Rub margarine into flour and sugar.
