Popular Nurse Honored By Friends

‘Miss Verda Jermyn, R.N. was ten-
ered a farewell pre-nuptial shower
at the home of Mrs. Plaxton last ev-
ening by a large group of friends,
when lovely gifts and well-wishes
were offered the popular girl. She is
elder daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. S.
Jermyn, Vancouver, and formerly of
Huntingdon, and has served upon the
M.-S.-A. Hospital nursing staff since
her honor graduation from the Royal
Columbian ‘Hospital, New Westmin-
ster. Tomorrow she leaves Abbots-
ford and is to be married to Mr. Dou-
glas Betts, Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, in Carcross, Yukon Territory,
in November.

their annual meeting recently at the
home of Mrs. L. Prasloski. The of-
ficers were unanimously re-elected, as

CANADIANS RESPOND TO FRON-

TIER SHOW AT BORDER TOWN

That the frontier spirit runs strong
in Canadians was evident by atten-
dance at Sumas’ rodeo at the week-
end, for of the 8,000 who attended, it
was estimated by wicket attendants
that over 4,000 were Canadians. And
of 53 cowboys and cowgirls compet-
ing in the arena, over 20 were from
this side of the border.

Attendance on Saturday was record-
ed at 3,500, and on Sunday, despite
a drizzle of rain, 4,500.

Monday Manager Hartwig faced
court complaints laid by the Humane
Society and by concession holders.
These were later dismissed.

While the financial outcome of the
event has not yet been ascertained,
sponsors state they are quite satisfied
with the attendance and performance,
and are already making plans for a
four-day event next year on July 1 to

Stolen Car Found in Vancouver

A new Ford coupe, owned by Mr.
W, Sehnare, and parked in front of
his house on Thursday night, was
driven away by thieves and not re-
covered until Saturday, when it was
found abandoned in Vancouyer. ‘The
car was not damaged, but several
personal articles and accessories were
missing.

A reception was tendered Rey. A.
S. Cameron and family last week, at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. J.
Tapp, when about thirty-five guests
were present to welcome Mr. Camer-
on as new minister to St. Paul's
church. The programme consisted of
musical selections, recitations and a
very instructive review of the work
of the church, given by the hostess,
Mrs. Tapp.

‘Mr. Cameron was presented an
address of welcome. Bouquets were
presented.to Mrs. Jean Fraser, as the
mother of the largest family in the
district, all of whom are members of
the church, also to Miss Alice Ander-
son, for her services as pianist for a
number of years, Excellent refresh-
ments were served by the hostess and
others. Mr. W. Owens presided as
the chairman_

Dan Hunt, prominent horse-breeder,
who is occupying the J. Higginson
farm west of Abbotsford almost made
a clean sweep of prizes in the horse
division at Chilliwack fair last week.
Showing two mares, two foals, one
yearling filly and a stallion, he took
five first prizes, three seconds, three
thirds, a grand championship and a
reserve championship. He also won
first prize for best showmanship of
horses, and was awarded a silver cup
for the best exhibit of horses, Teddy
Conway took first prize with his entry
in the yearling filly class.

Miss Jackman Receives Many Gifts

Mrs. Frenk McCallum and M A.
J. Jackman were co-hostesses at the
home of the latter on the Ross Road
last week, when they entertained at
a miscellaneous shower in honor of
Miss Ruth Jackman, a popular bride-
eleet, whose marriage to Mr. Cameron
Colbert takes place in Abbotsford on
October 5.

The guest of honor received her
many gifts from a peach-and-white
wagon drawn in by her two little ne-
phews, Jackie and Keith Jackman.

The room was decorated with
peach-and-white streamers while
sweet peas and asters made effective
floral decorations, The guests were
entertained with music.

Assisting the hostesses in serving a
dainty luncheon were Mrs, Lehman,
sister of the bride-to-be, Mrs. T. Lan-
caster, Mrs. P. Jackman, sister of the
guest of honor, Miss V. Mason and
Miss D, Drinkwater.

MRS. ELIZABETH LIND

Terminating more than a year's 1ll-
ness, death this week called Eli-
zabeth Lind, a well-known and res-
pected resident of Matsqui.

Born in Finland, Mrs, Lind was 54
years of age. She had been a resident
of Canada for 13 years, all of which
time had been spent in Matsqui. She
is survived by her husband, Victor
Lind, two daughters, Gunhild and
Ingeborg, and a son Carl, all at home.

The funeral was held on Tuesday
from the Henderson Funeral Home to
Hazelwood cemetery, Rev. Scratch of
Abbotsford officiating. A large num-

for 35 years, and did not recognize
each other on meeting.
