UCFYV to host several events during Working Together for Change week UCFV’s Abbotsford campus will host several events planned for Working Together for Change, a week of awareness being presented by the Abbotsford Task Force Response to Violence Against Women. Most of the events are free, but some require pre-registration. oe On Monday, October 21 from 7-10 p.m, in the UCFV boardroom (Abby A229), a workshop that looks beyond culture, will feature Sue Hammell from the Ministry of Women’s Equality, Suneira Thobani, past president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC), and a community organizer Satwinder Bains. The panel _ will lead a participatory discussion about breaking down the isolation and the . “different treatment” minority women face. . Abbotsford Police spokesperson Elly Sawchuk, and Jane Katz, who runs the “Home Improvement” program for abusive men, will lead a workshop entitled J1’1l Never Happen to Me! on Tuesday, October 22, at UCFV. The workshop will explore the issue of denial in a society that condones violence against women. It takes place from 7 to» 10 p.m. in Room A229 (board room). A variety of guest speakers will be on hand for the citizen’s forum on Violence in our Community on Wednesday, October 23 at the Abbotsford campus theatre, beginning at 7 p.m. Issues for ‘discussion will include concerns about violence, how to gather information and statistics, legal implications, and — community resources. The final event of the week is an evening of readings and short dramatic works featuring excerpts from the play This is For You, Anna, a skit on elder abuse, a reading by Abbotsford writer — Lorraine Lanteigne, and a presentation by UCFV theatre students.
