CALIFORNIA CAKE 1 large orange 1 cup seedless raisins (rinsed in hot water) 1% cup walnuts 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup white sugar 1% cup shortening 1 cup milk 2 eggs Grind orange, raisins and walnuts and set aside. Sift together flour, soda, salt and 1 cup sugar. Drop in soft shorten- ing and add % cup milk. Beat 2 min- utes with mixer or 300 strokes by hand. Add unbeaten eggs and remaining % cup milk. Beat 2 minutes longer. Add orange mixture. Spread in greased and floured pan 8x12 inches or 2 - 8x8- inch pans. Bake 40 to 50 minutes at 350 degrees. Glaze: 1% cup orange juice 1%Z cup white sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Mix and drizzle as soon as baked or ice with butter icing. —Laura MAWHINNEY QUEEN ELIZABETH CAKE % cup butter 1 egg 1 teaspoon baking powder 1% cup nut meats 1 cup white sugar 1 cup boiling water 1% cups flour Pinch salt 1 cup dates 1 teaspoon soda First prepare 1 cup of cut up dates. Add 1 teaspoon soda. Cover with 1 cup boil- ing water and let stand while other in- egredients are mixed. Cream butter, sugar and add the egg. Then add the dry ingredients and mix well. Add nuts and dates. Put in greased 9x 12-inch pan.
