UCFV’s dedication to lifelong learning and welcoming atmosphere for mature students was exemplified by two Bachelor of Arts graduates, Guy Rushton, 63, of Abbotsford and Viola Southgate, 69, of Chilliwack. They received special achievement awards and Southgate, who has been taking classes at UCFYV since it opened in 1974 — the same year some of her fellow graduates were born — gave the _ valedictorian address, in which she urged the university college: to remain a beacon for freedom of expression and the exchange of ideas, and a place safe from the evils of racism, homophobia, sexism, and intellectual intolerance (see story p.3). The convocation ceremony paused for a sombre and emotional moment when a Criminal Justice diploma was awarded posthumously to Kalvinder Gakhal, who was murdered along with eight members of her family in Vernon in April. Two of her uncles, Tajinder Dhaliwal and Hardev Gakhal of Vernon, accepted the diploma in her honour. Four major awards were given at the ceremony. The Governor General’s medal for academic achievement and good citizenship went to Lori - MacIntosh of = ° _. Chilliwack, | -one of the - first students to graduate with a major in history. MacIntosh ~ was praised by her professors for doing “path- breaking” . research in the field of gay and lesbian identity formation, and was also very active in student politics and cultural activities (see story p. 4). The Lieutenant Governor’s medal for. academic achievement and good citizenship in a two-year applied program went to Agriculture grad Darlene Fitzgerald of Abbotsford, who combined | full-time work for Aldergrove’s Clearview Horticultural products with . Library and Information Technology students Darren Smith and Samanda Winters (now Smith) were strangers when they came to the college, fell in love as students, were married in the winter, graduated together, and are expecting a baby later this year. part-time studies, and volunteer work with Scouts and the B.C. Nursery Trades Association. Her professors and fellow students lauded her for her leadership and “ organizational skills (see story p. 5). The Outstanding Achievement award. for exemplary work by a person or group within the UCFV community went to Aileen Ablog, Diane Burton, Astrid Opsetmoen, and Shawna Dyck, four laboratory technicians who participated in the Scientists and Innovators in the Schools program, in which scientists visit local schools to promote science as a fun’ activity and viable career (see story p. 6). The Betty Urquhart Community Service award for exemplary work by a person or group in a community in the UCFV region went to Glenn Fiett, for his work with the Partners in Learning program, which matches Ferndale _ institution inmates and at-risk youth for -academic tutoring and values sessions (see story p. 7) This is a special Convocation issue of Headlines, with limited - items on other topics.
