Headlines!March 13, 1997 Macbeth crowns UCEV season of theatre | | eer Story and photos by Rick Mawson The UCFV Theatre department will crown its 1996/97 season of theatre with a compelling production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Macbeth. A chilling descent into the depths of -a tormented murderer’s soul, Macbeth is a brilliant documentation of the _ headlong pursuit of power, driven by lust and ambition. Following the promptings of his wife and the three weird sisters, Macbeth, war hero and newly appointed Thane of Cawdor, stakes his claim to the Scottish throne through the cowardly murder of his lawful king. The fearful aftermath of this heinous act is played out in a wild paroxysm of revenge and death that spirals inexorably to its bloody conclusion. ee Martin Happer (Ross), Dino Pallone (MacDuff) and Warren Pullen (Caithness) in Macbeth. Macbeth is directed by department head Ian Fenwick. Hehas assembled a cast of over 20 performers for this production made up mostly of UCFV theatre students and augmented by community performers. The leading roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are taken by Ken Hildebrandt and Jenny Campbell, both upper-level acting students. Ken last appeared as Claudio in the UCFV 1992 production of Much Ado About Nothing. Jenny was last seen in ‘our recent production of Under Milk Wood as Polly Garter. The roles of the three weird sisters will be shared by five acting students performing on alternate evenings: Ramona Elke; Sheri Eyre, Kathleen Parsons; Eleanor Spooner and Emily Stone. Local community performer Sam Dunbar plays King Duncan: Theatre students Andrew Smith and Dino Pallone play Banquo and Macduff. Dena Ashbaugh is Lady Macduff and Kasey Kieler, who appeared as Ariel in last season’s hit production of The Tempest, plays Malcolm. Other performers in Macbeth, some playing multiple roles, include: Casey Baker, Sheldon Jeans, Martin Happer, Richard Heaven, John Jenkins, Jeffrey S. James, Marcus Lawrence, Kurtis Maguire, Alia McKellar and Warren Pullen. Cody Edmundson, a Chilliwack boy, will make his debut in the role of Macduff’s son. Set design for this production is by Warren Pullen, with costume design by Tiffiny Westby; and costume construction is supervised by Yvonne Krehbiel. Lighting designer is Jim Wenting; stage manager is Sandy Tait and combat coach is Delwen Stander. Macbeth Opens Friday, March 14 at8 p.m. in the UCFV Chilliwack theatre and runs March 15, 19 to 22, and 26 to 29 witha 12:30 p.m. matinee ~ Thursday, March 26.
