os hee _ Turner Valley, Alberta, may be har- ~ {s stated, to offer the electric power At Sf a Millions of ‘feet of natural gas now | going to waste every day in the nossed to generate electric power for Industrial and domestic purposes. A proposal to do this has been submit- ted to the Alberta Government by a British corporation, according to press reports. It is stated that the corpor- ution offers to spend $10,000,000 on the project at the outset and a total of $100,000,000 within 15 years and to begin work on the construction of fo plant within 90 days from the time the approyal of the Alberta Govern- ment is given to the proposal. The plant will be capable of generating 70 000 horse power of electricity with- ing.a year, The plan for this new project, as outlined, fs to collect the waste gas fn Turner Valley into one pipe line running to the power house where it would be used to turn specially-de- signed turbine wheels for the genera- tion of electrical power for which a market would be secured in indus trialization of southern Alberta. The power house would be located at a point probably 30 miles east of Turn- er Valley and it would not depend alone on gas from Turner Valley but would utilize also gas from other fields. The corporation proposes, it generated for sale in the provinces of “Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, and also in the bor- der states of the United States. The Government of Alberta is asked to pass legislation compelling all oil companies or individuals, whose gas is escap'ng and not being put to use, to supply the corporation with such gas at a price to be fixed through the Public Utilities Board. In consid- eration for the establishment of such a plant as proposed, an exclusive franchise for a iti of 99 years to "the would be ane) if desired, for the Alberta Government to take over the plant on an equitable basis at some time in the future. The scheme for utilization of the Turner Valley and other waste na- tural-gas would produce electric pow- er at a cost of about three-tenths of a cent per kilowatt-hour. Beneficial Effect Of Natural Sun Rays Is Greatly Lessened In Cities By Density Of Dust In the last few years since sun- light has come into vogue as an aid to health to such an extent that sun lamps have become a _ necessary accessory in barber shops and gym- nasiums and are urged for home use the natural sun rays have come under careful examination. It has been found, for instance, that in cities where the air {s full of par- ticles of dust and soot the beneficial rays of the sun are filtered out par- tially or entirely depending upon the density of the dust. the sea- shore the rays are magnified by re- flection on the water, accelerating the development of sunburn. The most recent discovery con- cerning the sun's rays is that in cer- tain kinds of woodland, the intensity is increased by reflection from the light bark and shiny leaves of the trees. Studies in the Chippewa Na- tional Forest shows that groves of aspens or birches have an intensity of 140 per cent of sunlight. Where pine predominates the intensity is less, because of the dark bark. Earned His His Money Lawyer's Treeretiona To Irish Biron Followed To Letter An Irish lawyer was defending a fellow countryman on a charge of murder, and the case looked very black against his client, so black, in- deed, that the lawyer felt that some- thing drastic must be done without delay; so at the end of the first day's proceedings he managed to buttonhole one of the jurymen whom he knew, and arranged to pay him £10 if he would stick out for a verdict of manslaughter and not murder. In due course the jury re- tired to consider their verdict and, after “being out’ some hours, re- turned a verdict of “manslaughter.” Client and lawyer were, of course, delighted, but a few days later when the lawyer paid over the £10 after warmly thanking the juryman, he was scarcely prepared for Paddy's— “Begorrah, yer honor, an’ I pulled it off all right; all the rest of the bhoys were for letting him go free, but I sthuck out for manslaughter.” S embossed letters on a wide roll of thin aluminum foil, with the result that the finished product corresponds in some respects to the Braille sys- tem. Naumburg estimates his ma- chine will increase the reading range of the blind a thousand-fold.
