With the start of the fiscal year on April | just around the corner, people start to worry about the university college budget and the impact it will have on their department. The news has rarely been rosy in recent years. Even when UCFV was growing because of university college expansion, it often faced shortfalls in other areas because new FTEs were tied to the degree programs Well, the process has started again. A budget committee, comprised of senior management, an FSA representative, a student representative, and UCC representative, met recently to review a set of assumptions drafted by the Finance and Administration department. People in charge of managing budgets have also had the opportunity to submit a one-page statement summarizing issues the committee should consider, such as enrollment levels, new activities, potential revenue sources, and “must do” items. The “number crunching” has begun, as Finance and Administration compares projected expenditures with known revenues, and identifies gaps. Management will review the implications of the budget proposals This year’s Shakespeare production, As You Like It, opens this Friday, March 13, with previews Wednesday and Thursday. It continues through March 28. Pictured above: Emily Stone (Rosalind), Richard Heaven (Touchstone) and Lesley Galbecka (Celia). In addition to the recently announced extension of the tuition freeze in B.C., some of the “assumptions” that the budget committee is working from include: ¢ The monetary value assigned to existing FTE (full-time equivalent student spaces) will not increase, but more FTE will likely be funded (estimated two percent additional FTEs system-wide). UCFV is anticipating that some of the FTE needed to make up the 1,110 FTE originally promised for the university-college expansion will be allocated this year. UCFV and the Ministry have informally agreed that 348 FTE would address this shortfall, Please see next page What’s making Headlines?
