Headlines/March 16, 1992 UCFV places fifth at B.C. colleges business competition By Janet Falk At the beginning of February a number of students from the departments of Business Administration and Computer Information Systems commenced an internal competition to vie for the privilege of being the team to represent UCFV at the BC Colleges Business Competition. The students and instructors involved in our practice run were: Team 1: Adam Schumph, Robert Ormiston, Vaden Ellesworth, Wilf Vicktor Team 2: Quinn Jones, Darcy Siebert, Jim Vermeer, Lisa Minter Team 3: Steve Yap, Business Administration Instructor Team 4: Janet Falk, Business Administration Instructor/Coach During the practice run, which lasts two weeks, the students learn how to manage the company depicted in the simulation — in this case, a commuter airline. The practice is essential experience to gain before attending the competition, and the team appreciated the help of all those who participated. After winning the internal competition, Team 2, led by chief executive officer Quinn Jones, tty ua ; participated for three days in an intensive business simulation game at the Executive Inn in Richmond, B.C. Fourteen colleges were in attendance and the competition was excellent. The UCFYV team ran their company, Advantage Air — the frequent flyer, with precision and finesse, and only the occasional bit of panic! At 11 p.m. on the first evening of the competition, all teams were notified that proforma financial statements for three years must be developed by early the next morning. After completing this task at 3 a.m. and rising again at 6:30 a.m., the team knew that this was going to be a tough game! I have been coaching the business competition team for six years now, and this team was the most cohesive group I have ever coached. All these students will be excellent candidates for all those businesses out there looking for team players! On Saturday evening at the competition banquet, we learned that Advantage Air had placed fifth overall, and won the Best Marketing Manager award. Each year as I find the pressure of preparing for the competition overwhelming, I swear this will be my last year of coaching, but each year the Advantage Air team (I-r): Janet Falk, Lisa Minter, Darcy Siebert, Quinn Jones. Missing: Jim Vermeer. satisfaction of watching the students put into practice all those skills you hoped that they were learning, prompts me to volunteer again. The team is grateful for the local sponsorships of Brian Coulter, Business Adminstration; Cameron Roy, Abbotsford Bookstore; Barry Bompas, Personnel; and Brian and Faye Minter, of Minter Gardens. Faculty evaluation opinions sought During the past few months the Evaluation Review committee (a joint management/FSA committee) has been undertaking an assessment of faculty evaluation practices and procedures at UCFV. Among the issues under discussion is the need to streamline the collation of data derived from student evaluation questionnaires. Another matter that has achieved considerable attention is the possibility of enlarging the part played by departmental colleagues in the evaluation of UCFV faculty members. The committee hopes to bring forward some recommendations for revisions and improvements to our evaluation process in the near future. In the mean time, submissions to the committee are invited from anyone who would like his or her concerns to be considered, especially in regard to the concept of portfolio evaluation. Committee members include: Ian McAskill, Kevin Busswood, Katherine Perrault, Heather Stewart, Casey Sheridan, Dave Allen, Barry Bompas.
