Headlines/September 2, 1998 Members of the 1998 Mexico Study Tour Mexico Study Tour a Great Success “,..a great experience”... “a great group”. These were some of the reactions from the 19 students on the 1998 UCFV Mexico Study Tour. From May 4-26, students were given an opportunity to experience the culture, history, and landscape of Mexico while completing courses in Anthropology, Geography, Latin American Studies and Sociology. Covering a lot of ground in a fast paced 22 days, the group spent time in the urban and rural settings of Mexico City, Tlaxcala; Chiapas, and Oaxaca. Highlights mentioned by many students were visits to archaeological sites, seeing striking colonial architecture, ‘staying at the centre of large and small cities, and the opportunity to walk through villages and the countryside. A short retreat at the beach in Puerto Escondido concluded the tour and allowed the participants to catch up on their studies and prepare to return to the reality of UCFV. UCFYV Study tours to Mexico began in 1993 to enrich the academic experience of students by connecting classroom study with the land and people being studied. This was the third, and largest, UCFV Mexico Study Tour. Kudos to the “energetic and knowledgeable instructors” who organized and participated in the 1998 tour—David Gibson, Stephen Piper, and Colin Ridgewell. Students in UCFV’s Centre of Business Development and Training Eco-Tourism program were hard at work building a series of steps on Mount Thom trail recently. The trail enhancement was one component of a program that provides training for young people in the rapidly growing tourism industry. The 21-week program also covers ecology and earth sciences, outdoor guiding and adventure tourism, nature interpretation, and aboriginal studies.
