New Board executive At its September meeting, the UCFV Board elected its executive. Retaining the position of Chair is Brian Minter of Chilliwack. Minter has been chair since September, 1990, and a Board member since June, 1987. Minter is famous locally, around the province, and around the world for his knowledge of, and achievements in, horticulture. He and his wife Faye are proprietors of tourist attraction Minter Gardens, and of Country Gardens and Country Garden World, two Chilliwack garden stores. Minter’s gardening expertise is shared outside Chilliwack through regular radio and TV appearances and magazine and journal articles. Minter graduated from UBC with an Honours BA in English. He was named “Chilliwack’s Citizen to be Recognized” in 1981, and made a member of the Order of Canada in 1990. He is an active Rotarian, and a past president of the Chilliwack Kinsmen Club. Bill Sharp of Mission retained his position as Vice-Chair. Sharp is general manager of Valley Rite-Mix, 3 headquartered in Matsqui, and has been a member of the UCFV Board since June, 1987. Sharp holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia. He is former secretary/ treasurer of the Abbotsford school district, and also served as the first treasurer of Fraser Valley College. Wendy Lee was elected to the other Vice-Chair position. She was appointed to the UCFV Board in June, 1992. An Abbotsford resident, Lee is executive assistant for the Abbotsford- Matsqui foundation. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from UBC. She has been executive director of the United Way of the Fraser Valley, and has done consulting work for organizations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canada Games. Poster contest Chilliwack activities coordinator Julia Brotherston extends a challenge to al! members of the UCFV community. She is running a poster contest to raise awareness of the health hazards of smoking. All anti-smoking posters submitted will be hung for viewing and eligible for a prize of a $60 dinner at the Black Forest restaurant in Harrison, donated by first aid attendant Sandy Simon and Activities. Deadline for poster submissions is Oct. 23. Prize awarded Oct. 30. Multicultural challenges The Matsqui-Abbotsford Healthy Community program is presenting Return from Isolation ... Moving Forward, a community forum on multicultural challenges in the Fraser Valley on Friday, Oct. 23. Participants can choose one of four afternoon workshops (Education, Health, Interfaith Dialogue, Youth at Risk) or just attend the evening community forum.
