W. Win- son in Sumas police court last week on Billy Lewis of Sardis In- dian Reserve. Lewis was found guilty on a charge of causing grievious bodily harm arising out of a fracas at Kilgard during the Dominion Day weekend when Fra- ser Kelly of Kilgard sustained a broken ankle. A similar charge preferred against Wilfred Tommy, also of Sardis, was dismissed. John Currie of Chilliwack, a white, charged with trespassing on a re- serve, was fined $5 and costs or seven days. Both Lewis and Cur- rie selected the jail terms. Laura James, Sardis Indian, charged with being intoxicated, was given 12 months suspended sentence with costs and Johnny Williams of Kil- gard six months suspended and costs. A sixth party to the fracas may still appear in court, Const. Jack Blezard states. THREE CONGREGATIONS PLAN JOINT PICNIC AT BOWEN ISLAND St. Margaret’s Church Guild of Bradner met at the home of Mrs. G. H. Loach on Tuesday, the meet- ing being presided over by Mrs. J. Pennington. The repairs to the church are progressing and on their completion the church will also be painted. The annual con- gregational picnic wil be held on July 30 when the congregation of St. Margaret’s will join with St. Matthew’s of Abbotsford and St. James’ church of Vancouver, jour- neying to Bowen Island for the day. A letter from a person in Northampton, England, to one of the members was read by Rev. F. Henderson. It was very inter- esting to hear direct of the co- operation and courage with which condtions are being met. HOSPITAL RATES The Chilliwack Hospital Board endorsed a report submitted by Alderman J. B. Dennis and Coun. W. S. Annis, bringing into effect the motion that private and semi- private wards be paid for one week in advance at slightly higher rates. BRANCH Red Cross Headquarters NOTES © ©@ © OH ® In answer to several enquiries, we have been advised by our Div- isional office that all supplies go- ing overseas are being shipped directly to England, and that no- thing is going from there to France or to ony other part of As a matter of fact, it is for the Canadian or the British Red Cross to make shipments to Wurope. Blankets previously designated for France were diverted to England, as the society could not take the risk of their falling into German hands. At present those not needed are being stored in England, but they will all be used and needed very urgently. “VOICE OF THE RED CROSS” Every Sunday from 2:50 to 3 p.m. there will be a broadcast for the Red Cross over the CBC net- work from coast-to-coast. WASTE PAPER We have received enquiries about the collection and sale of waste paper for the Red Cross. At some points this is being done, but chiefly, we believe, by some soci- ety which makes itself responsible for the collection and storage, which is the great difficulty. Nat- urally, it could not be stored at Headquarters on account of the fire ‘hazard. However, we have written for more details and ex- pect to be able to supply more in- formation in this column later. COLLECTION BOXES Please do not forget to drop your pledge money in one of the several boxes distributed through- out the town. We want to have a total at the end of the month when the boxes are opened (and replaced by new ones) which will Surprise even the most optimistic of us. TOES OF SOCKS While most’ of the work being turned in is of an inereasingly splendid quality, strange as it may seem, there is still the odd sock with knots and improper toe. Please, yarn must be spliced (did you ever try wearing a sock with a hard knot in it?) and grafted toes are the only ones accepted by the Society. There is a neces- sarily ‘high standard of perfec- tion set because, remember, it is your money that is being spent and -there must be no room for ériticism. Burope. impossible REFUGEES (Continued from Front Page) waters. Approximately 700 evacuee children and mothers were on the same boat. The Ffolliotts first set foot on Canadian soil at Montreal on Monday, July 8, and the 6000- mile journey to Abbotsford was completed by train. Speaking for herself and her little sons, Mrs. Ffolliott was en- thusiastic in her praise of Canada and the welcome. accorded them by everyone. “The countryside is very similar to that which we left,” declared Mrs. Ffolliott, but she added that it was a cheerful change to see lights at night and to escape for a time from the ever-present barricadements that protect Great Britain from inva- sion by the Nazis, In reply to a question, the Eng- lish lady said that rationing of food in the Old Country was not severe and not extensive enough to affect anyone's health, enjoy- ment or morale. ‘Just before we left home to go on board ship we spent an hour and a ‘half in our air-raid cellar during the course of one of the many Nazi raids,” remarked Mrs. Ffolliott to emphasize her relief at being being away from the war zone, for the present at least, and in a country where the resolve is as great but the danger much less.
