UNIVERSITY COLLEGE Volume ih, Number iM November 4, 1998 Political Thriller Opens UCFV Theatre Season When a fresco — in the style of Italian master Giotto di Bondone — is discovered behind the walls of an abandoned church in war-torn central Europe, the artistic, political and religious orthodoxies of the day are challenged. That’s the backdrop for the opening play of the UCFV Theatre department’s 1998/99 season. David Edgar’s acclaimed political thriller Pentecost, opens November 13 at 8 p.m. Originally commissioned for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Pentecost is a brilliantly crafted, cultural and historical “whodunit” that has stimulated and entertained audiences worldwide. The conflicts created by the fresco discovery are played out against a continually shifting balance of power, mirroring the fears and uncertainties of thousands of refugees created by years of ethnic cleansing. Pentecost is directed by Bruce Kirkley. The strong and talented cast of 21 performers includes: Martin Happer as Oliver Davenport, an English art historian; Tiffani Mohammed as Gabriella Pecs, a National Museum official; Kurtis Macquire as Dr. Leo Katz, an American art historian; Carol McCormick, as Anna ne Jedlikova; Sharmin MacKay debuts as Yasmin, a Palestinian terrorist leader; Darren Blakeborough as Father Sergei Bojovic; Jeremy Brown plays Father Petr Karolyi, Casey Baker is Mikhail Czaba and Marco Giguere is Antonio. Other performers, some of whom play multiple roles, include: Victor Cameron, Jennifer Curdie, Jamie Freckleton, Lesley Galbecka, Steve Kurowski, Marcus Lawrence, Tanya McCartney, Joel Murdoch, Kathleen Shattock, Jim Smith, Dave Strang and Alexis Quednau. Beugeling. Costume design is by Jody Cameron with costume construction being supervised by Denise Gingrich. Lighting designer is Jim Wenting; sound design is by Nancy Deba and special effects supervisor 1s Jim Servizi. The play runs Nov. 13, 14, 18 to 21, and 25 to 28 at 8 p.m. in the UCFV Theatre on the Chilliwack campus. Two special-priced previews will be held Nov. 11 and 12, and two matinees will run at noon on Nov. 12 and Nov. 24. For an additional $15, theatre patrons can enjoy a three-course meal in the Chilliwack cafeteria prepared by the Professional Cook program before attending the play Nov. 14.
