Chocolate Squares Heat 1 cup milk, 3 thsps. cocoa. Stir until mixture begins to thicken. Remove from heat. Add and beat 14 cup butter, 1 egg. Add 1 cup brown sugar well packed, 14 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 cup flour, % tsp. baking powder. Mix 1 !tsp. baking soda in 1 tbsp. milk. Add soda mixture to cocoa-flour mixture. Beat well. Bake in shallow pan 12 to 15 minutes in 350 degrees F. oven. Beat eggs and add rest of ingredients. Beat well. Bake in a 350 degree F. oven about 20 minutes. When cool ice with lemon butter icing. Cut into squares. —Bessie Burton Nanaimo Bars 'Y, cup butter 4 cup white sugar 5 tbsp. cocoa 1 tsp. vanilla 1 egg 2 cups fine graham wafer Y cup chopped walnuts crumbs 1 cup cocoanut Place butter, sugar, cocoa, vanilla and egg in bowl. Set dish in boiling water and stir until butter has melted and mixture resembles thin cus- tard. Combine crumbs, cocoa, nuts and cocoanut. Add to custard mix- ture. Pack this well in a 9’ square pan and spread with the follow- ing icing: icing: Cream |'4 cup butter 2 tbsp. vanilla custard powder, 3 tbsp. milk or Jello pudding powder Blend in two cups icing sugar.
