Headlines/November 4, 1998 Students and faculty show off their prizes after playing “Wheel of Trivia” in the new student Science Centre on Abbotsford campus. - Students and faculty celebrate new Science Centre with fun night of trivia By Edith Camm About 85 science students and faculty from Biology, Chemistry and Physics got together for a social evening on October 7 and enjoyed a rousing game of Wheel of Trivia, masterminded by Student Activities coordinator Jill Harrison. Teams worked together to answer science questions provided by faculty from the Chemistry, Biology and Physics departments. Participants were also treated to pizza courtesy of the Scitech Dean Wayne Welsh, ice cream sundaes (thanks, Student Activities!) and pop (courtesy of Employee Relations Dean Barry Bompas). Prizes included Science and Technology Week t-shirts and. the especially-valued dean’s coffee cups that look like beakers. During the social evening, ‘students were also encouraged to join a science student society at the event. Anyone interested should contact Wendy Graham or Heather Innes directly or see Janelle Dick in room B310B. The real centrepiece of the evening was the “functional ” opening of the new Student Science centre. While construction of the facility is still ongoing, Dean Welsh and the natural science departments wanted to get it up and running before mid-term exams, said Biology department head and event organizer, Edith Camm. The purpose of the centre, which is located in rooms B308C and B310J, is to provide science students a place to study, hold tutorials, and have access to science texts without some of the restrictions imposed by a library. Science faculty members plan to hold some of their office hours in the centre. Considerable work went into making the rooms look appealing, according to Camm. Priscilla Fougette, Administrative Assistant, and Janelle Dick, Science Assistant, organized. _ installation of shelves, a new computer, and colourful science-oriented posters. Special thanks go to Facilities for performing a bit of magic in getting important components like the new lighting in place in time for the event, _ Camm said. Thanks also go out to faculty who donated posters and texts. “The rooms have been very well used since their opening,” said Camm, whose office is located across the hall from the - centre. “I’ve heard some-very productive discussions coming out of there.” | An official opening of the centre will be held later this fall.
