HEAVENLY SPICE CAKE (Makes an extra large Cake) 1 cup shortening 2 tsp. soda 21% cups sugar 1 tsp. each of cloves, cinnamon, 2 eggs unbeaten vanilla and salt 8 tbsp. cocoa 2 cups buttermilk 3 cups flour Cream shortening and 1% cups of sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each one. Mix the rest of the sugar with the cocoa and spices and add it to the first mixture. Add alternately the buttermilk (with soda dissolved) and the flour and bake in a moderate oven (350°). Cover top with this filling: 2 squares of chocolate 1 cup chopped nuts 1 cup sugar 14 cup sweet cream 1 egg well beaten 1 tsp. vanilla Stir all ingredients together and boil mixture until it thickens... Take off stove immediately and allow to cool before spreading. This frosting does not get hard. ee en ee ee ee ee ae ee ee ee TWO EGG FRUIT CAKE 1% cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs well beaten 2 cups sifted flour 3 tsp. baking powder l% cup mixed peel 4 tbsp. crushed pineapple 2 tbsp. grated orange rind small bottle cherries 1 cup raisins 14 cup chopped nuts 1 tsp. brandy flavoring Cream butter and sugar well and add beaten eggs. Drain pineapple well and add with grated orange rind. Reserve % cup flour to dredge the fruit and sift the remainder with baking powder. Add alternately with milk. Dry cherries and chop them. Put in a bowl with raisins and chopped nuts and sift % cup flour over them. Fold these into. batter with flavoring. Mix well. Bake in slow oven (325°) for 1% to 2 hours. Keeps 2 weeks. MRS. E.
