THE DAILY PROVINCE AUGUST 14, 1914 DAVICHAND SENT UP FOR TRIAL ------------------- Dr. Davichand, the Hindu who was in Police Court this morning on the charge of obtaining money under false pretences before Acting Magistrate Frank Richards, J. P., was ordered to be committed for trial. The specific charge on which Dr. Davichand was heard was brought by a fellow-countryman named Fazzen Daht. He alleged that Davichand had secured $50 from him by representing that he was in the Government employ. This is alleged to have happened when the Empress of China arrived, the latter part of July. On the steamer came a large number of Hindus, among which were Fazzen Daht and his brother. Fazzen Daht was passed by the immigration officials all right, but his brother was detained at the detention shed on account of some eye affliction, which the Government officials claimed he had. This worried Fazzen Daht, who cried some over the fact that his brother was being detained and while in this grief Dr. Davichand was said to have approached him and after telling Fazzen Daht that he was a Government doctor that he would allow him to land provided $50 was forthcoming. The money was raised and paid to Dr. Davichand. At the trial this morning no defence was offered by Ald. Baxter, counsel for Dr. Davichand. It was intimated by His Worship that he would send Dr. Davichand up for trial so the defence placed no witnesses in the box. Dr. Davichand has been on trial for similar offences, but has been freed, the evidence not being sufficient to warrant sending him up for trial.
