ORANGE BREAD 2 cups sifted flour 14 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder % teaspoon salt 1 egg, beaten 1 cup milk 4 tablespoons melted butter 1 cup orange peel 1 teaspoon vanilla Sift dry ingredients together and add balance of ingredients. Bake in a loaf pan at 350° for 45 minutes, or until tester comes out clean. Sprinkle top with sugar before baking. To prepare orange rind: Peel three large oranges, cover peel with cold water and bring to boil. Drain off water, cover with water again and boil until tender. Cool and cut off membranes. Chop peel very fine and add % cup sugar and % cup water and cook until thick. —JEssIE CLELAND APPLE BREAD 2 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1% teaspoon baking soda 14 teaspoon salt % cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon grated orange rind 4% cup orange juice 34 cup raisins 1% cup chopped nuts % cup finely chopped apples Sift flour, measure and sift with other dry ingredients. Cream shortening, add Sugar gradually, mixing until creamy. Add egg and beat well. Mix in rind and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with juice. Add raisins, nuts and apple with last addition of flour. Mix only to blend. Batter will be fairly stiff. Spoon into well greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Turn onto a floured board and roll to an 8 by 12 rectangle. Cut into 24 sticks, place on a greased pan and brush with the rest of the butter. Sprinkle on the cheese. Cream the butter, add sugar and egg and other ingredients. Mix just until blended.
