A return tabled in the House of Commons shows that for the fiscal year of 1922-23 a total of $59,- 711,000 was paid by the people of Can- ada in income taxes and of this the farmers of Canada paid but $480,353, or less than one per cent. of the total. “It is when people in the east con- template such things as these,” says the Journal, “that they grow a little weary of any western claim of inten- tional discrimination.” Now, as we understand it, the people who pay income taxes are those who have incomes above a certain sum. If you haven’t an income you do not pay an income tax; if you are lucky enough to have an ‘income you con- tribute part of it to the government. The income tax law is very exact. It is claimed by the government that it is thoroughly enforced. Therefore, if the farmers of Canada, both east and west, are not paying income taxes it is because they haven't the incomes. Therefore, the Journal is railing at the farmers of Canada because they are not earning enough money—the lazy beggars. Why don’t they make money like some of the corporations do? Why will they not go in for mixed farniing? The Journal might make a few in- quirfes among the farmers of Eastern Canada as to why they are not paying income taxes down there. If it con- sulted the records it might find that on a percentage basis the farmers of Western Canada are paying more in- come tax than the farmers of Eastern Canada.
