THE DAILY PROVINCE SEPTEMBER 14, 1907 p.3 HINDUS THROWN OUT OF BERTHS ----------------------Race Prejudice Nearly Results in Riot Aboard Steamship Portland Because Orientals Pre-empt Beds. ---------------------Seattle, Sept. 14.--Race prejudice nearly resulted in a riot aboard the steamship Portland early yesterday morning, when a crowd of white men, passengers for Valdez, roughly handled a number of Hindus whom the Alaska Coast Steamship Company attempted to put aboard the vessel. A serious clash was prevented by Capt. Humphrey and his officers. Excited passengers seized one Hingu[Sic] and threw him to the pier. The rest followed without protest. Thirty-two of them camped on the pier all night. The Hindus took passage on the Portland with the expectation of obtaining work at Valdez. They went to the vessel at Pier 10 at 8 o’clock Wednesday night. The white passengers came aboard between 12 and 1 o’clock and found that the Hindus had taken their berths. An indignation meeting was promptly held during which excited passengers urged each other to throw the Hindus into the bay. Capt. Humphrey was told that not a man would take passage if the Hindus were allowed to remain aboard. At this juncture someone seized a Hindu and pushed him down the gangplank. Another was unceremoniously thrown over the rail to the pier. The rest followed without protest. Huddled together, the Hindus camped on the pier all night. At daybreak they induced expressinon[Sic] to carry away their baggage. The Portland sailed for Valdez without them. THE DAILY PROVINCE SEPTEMBER 14, 1907 p.3
